The International Design Forum
Moutamarat’s first annual International Design Forum (IDF) is due to take place in Dubai on 27 - 29 May 2007. Thanks to the vibrancy of its creative industries and development projects, Dubai is rapidly becoming a regional hub for design and creativity. The IDF champions the message that design is a critical tool for cultural understanding and business excellence. In addition, this high-profile event will focus on two specific design disciplines: urban design and industrial design. Using an innovative format set to stimulate thinking and knowledge exchange in the field of design, the sessions will take the form of informative, lively and challenging discussions on the different connotations of design and its intersection with other disciplines. The IDF will strike a balance between being a public event and a closed, exclusive, knowledgebased forum. Installations and other designers’ lounges will celebrate the power of design, while an innovative learning experience will be provided through high-level debates and new knowledge products.

Design Forum
The Forum groups a series of interactive workshops using an innovative format designed to stimulate thinking and knowledge in the field of design. The sessions will involve people of different backgrounds and areas of expertise. They take the form of informative, lively and challenging discussions on the different connotations of design and its intersection with other disciplines.
The IDF workshops will primarily focus on industrial design and urban design. Specifically, it will address the following themes Where should I look for the next great idea?
Design and creativity in the business world
Design, cultural innovation and the economy
The fusion of technology and design
‘Green’ design: Can environmentally-friendly design save the world?
Youth, design and the new frontiers of creativity
How does globalization influence lifestyle models?

Design Lounges
The Lounges are networking areas designed to stimulate an exchange of ideas between local and international designers and industrialists in a private and exclusive setting. The Design Lab is open to all participants for interaction and discussion

The Media and Publication Lounges for leading publications working with Moutamarat
The Sponsors and Partners Lounges for companies that support the Forum
Design Installations
The Installations, grouped under the title Experience Design, comprise an exhibition of inspirational design. The installations will include the following: Design ME (Design in the Middle East), incorporating a range of classic and modern designs around calligraphy, local crafts, etc
Timeless Design, giving a historical representation of design by displaying the technological evolution of specific products
Designers’ installations
Country-focused installations
Some of the installations will also be open to the public.
The IDF will also provide a platform for major announcements in the design industry, such as the launch of new industry-related products.
The IDF should not be missed by forward-thinking corporate, media, civil and political institutions, since it presents a unique opportunity to harness the power of design.
Why Dubai?
Dubai, with its spectacular growth and its broad spectrum of people, identities and architectural styles, is widely perceived as an innovative melting pot. Thanks to the vibrancy of its creative industries and development projects, Dubai is rapidly becoming a regional hub for design and creativity. The city has also reinvented itself as a new center of debate on the global stage. This reputation, along with the International Design Forum, will place both Dubai and the region as a whole on the international design map.
Design Advisory Board
The Design Advisory Board is a community of leading personalities from different design-related fields who work with Moutamarat on the creation, international positioning and strategy-making of the IDI. Members of the Board act as global ambassadors of the Initiative and as a source of legitimacy for Moutamarat’s work on Design.
The Design Board is scheduled to convene in Dubai and other locations prior to the IDF, due to take place in May 2007, in order to brainstorm on issues related to both the Initiative and the Forum. Throughout the rest of the year, Board members will be in regular contact with Moutamarat to discuss: Specific areas of the program where they will hold individual responsibilities

Stefano Boeri
Editor-in-Chief, ?Domus? magazine, Italy
Stefano Boeri is editor of Italy?s Domus magazine. He is also an architect, an urban planner, and a frequent contributor to the Italian economic press. Currently, Boeri?s work is focused on transformation projects in several Mediterranean ports, including Genoa, Naples, Mytilene, Salerno and Trieste.

Joan Busquets

Joan Busquets is Professor in Practice of Urban Planning and Design at the GSD and a renowned urban planner, designer, and architect. Formerly Professor of Town Planning at Barcelona Polytechnic University?s School of Architecture, Busquets was also Head of Urban Planning for Barcelona City Council and involved in the urban preparations for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Farhan Faraidooni

Farhan is currently CEO of Sama Dubai, the international real estate investment and development arm of Dubai Holding. He also sits on the Boards of Dubai Healthcare City (another Dubai Holding entity); the Ministry of Religious Endowment and Minors Affairs; and Al Ahli Sports Club.
Rodney Fitch
Founder and Chairman, Fitch & Co., UK
In 1972, Rodney Fitch founded Fitch & Co., which in 1982 was the first product design company to obtain a full listing on the London Stock Exchange. In the 1980s, it led the design industry, with a broad international portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects.
Zaha Hadid
Architect, UK
Zaha Hadid studied at the Architectural Association (AA) from 1972, and was awarded the Diploma Prize in 1977. She was a partner of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, taught at the AA with Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) collaborators Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis, and led her own studio at the AA until 1987.
Nadim Karam
CEO, Hapsitus, Lebanon
With a background that fuses Oriental and Japanese theories of space, Nadim Karam created concepts like ?micropluralism?, ?performance architecture?, and ?story-telling architecture?. In 1996, he founded Atelier Hapsitus. His work, an interdisciplinary fusion that includes painting, sculpture, urban installation and architecture, is the subject of Voyage (2000), and a new book ? Urban Toys ? that will be released in 2006.
George Katrodytis

George Katodrytis is deeply involved in architecture through practice, teaching and research. He studied at the University of Manchester, and taught at the Architectural Association from 1987 to 1994.
Bernard Khoury
Bernard Khoury studied architecture at the Rhode Island school of Design before going on to Harvard University, where he completed a Masters in Architectural Studies in 1993. In 2001, the Rome municipality awarded him the Borromini prize with honorable mention.

Khalid Malik

Best known for his democratic design sensibility, Karim Rashid is a leading figure in product, interior, fashion and furniture design, as well as lighting and art. Born in Cairo and raised in Canada, Karim now practices in New York.
Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah

Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah?s passion for fashion first emerged when he encountered the tailoring genius of Comme des Gar?ons and Yohji Yamamoto as a teenager. Al-Sabah has clearly not had the most conventional background for a luxury fashion retailer, being the nephew of H.H. Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Emir of Kuwait.
Peter Zec

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, born in 1956, has been president of the internationally renowned Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen since 1991. He developed the institution, founded in 1954, into a qualification and communication center for business, design and society.
