The Musician as Listener May 22, 2008 May 23, 2008 Belgium

http://www.orpheusinstituut.be/en/seminars/orcim-seminar
FIRST CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Seminar on The Musician as Listener
22-23 May, 2008
Ghent, Belgium

THE MUSICIAN AS LISTENER

The aim of the seminar is to present, discuss and disseminate new
research relating to music listening, from the musician?s point of
view. Experience has shown that how musicians listen to music often
differs in important ways from how even knowledgeable non-musicians
listen. These findings have important implications for artistic
research in music, and it is the aim of this seminar to explore some
of these and consider their implications for a variety of artistic
research issues. Along the way the seminar will reflect on the impact
of these findings in relation to the use and effectiveness of specific
tools within artistic research. In general, the seminar aims to
contribute to and reinforce the growing field of artistic research in
music.

The seminar will be relevant for musicians and graduate students
working in all areas of research linked to musical practice.

Themes relating to all aspects of the seminar topic are welcome.
Particular themes covered could include:
- How does your personal listening history influence your performances
or compositions?
- How do you (learn to) listen to yourself while performing?
- What do you, as a performer, composer or pedagogue, listen for in
music?

In addition, questions may be discussed that deal with conducting
artistic research itself, in particular the way one?s personal
listening experience and mode of listening may affect one?s research.

Practitioners from all music disciplines are invited to submit
proposals for presentations. Proposals should consist of 300-400 words
and provide a brief account of the project?s rationale, method of
investigation and findings. In addition, proposals should include the
title of the presentation, names and institutional affiliations of
each author, short curriculum vitae, contact information and required
technical support. Please indicate whether your presentation includes
live music. Presentations will be allocated 30 minutes, this includes
10 minutes for questions and discussion.

Deadline for proposals is March 1, 2008. Notification of acceptance
will be made by 13 March 2008. Proposals should be sent to: info@orpheusinstituut.be

The seminar takes place at the Orpheus Instituut Ghent, Belgium. It
starts on Thursday 22 May 2008 12h, and closes on Friday 23 May 2008

Orpheus Instituut has been providing postgraduate education for
musicians since 1996 and introduced a doctoral programme for
performers and composers in 2004. It acts as a forum where musicians
can expand their artistic training by conducting practice-based
research. The Orpheus Instituut is respected as an artistic research
centre where musicians can take on the artistic and social challenges
of the future.

Orpheus Research Centre in Music [ORCiM]
ORCiM was founded in 2007 by the Orpheus Instituut. ORCiM contemplates
the grounds for artistic research, develops and implements new tools
for artistic research and generates new research on specific topics in
musical practice. The aim of ORCiM is to provide musicians
investigating questions of artistic relevance with an appropriate
research environment and to promote the kind of research that enhances

National seminar on Gandhian Liberation Techniques for the National Regeneration Movement - Second Freedom Struggle February 1, 2008 February 3, 2008 India

http://www.ruraluniv.ac.in
??The Congress has won political freedom, but it is yet to win economic freedom, social and moral freedom. These freedoms are harder than the political if only because they are constructive, less exciting and not spectacular??
- M.K. Gandhi, 27 Jan. 1948

Introduction: The political freedom that we won in 1947 is only the first step towards achieving the goal of ??Purna Swaraj?? for India. We also need to win economic, social and moral freedoms as pointed out by Mahatma Gandhi in a letter written on 27th Jan. 1948, just 3 days before his martyrdom. This is the unfinished task bequeathed to posterity by the Father of the nation and other ??freedom fighters?? who laid down their lives for the political freedom of this country. Of these three-fold freedoms that are yet to be won for India, the ??moral freedom?? is the most important one at this critical moment in the history of our nation. Without moral freedom no other freedom can be sustained. Hence, a ??Second Freedom Struggle?? has become an imperative of the era to liberate India from the evil forces and win moral freedom for our country.

Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram: Gandhigram Rural University www.ruraluniv.ac.in was founded on Gandhian Principles. It dedicates its services to Rural Development. The University is known for its Community Development and Extension Programmes as well as social research activities. The Alumni of the University engage themselves in various tasks focused on National Development. They play a vital role in the National Development with NGOs participation and partnership. This reputed University has a track record in organizing, conducting conferences and setting trends at the National and International level. It is now well poised for the Second Freedom Struggle.

Location: Gandhigram is located 55 km away from Madurai on the northern side. The nearest airport is Madurai and the nearest railway station is Dindigul and Ambathurai, which is closer to Gandhigram Rural University. All the trains stop at Ambathurai except a few trains.

National Regeneration Movement (NRM): The National Regeneration Movement was initiated by Swami Sachidananda Bharathi at Hyderabad during the Golden Jubilee of Indian Independence for moral regeneration and national reconstruction of India under the patronage of Swami Ranganathananda and with the active support of Bharat Ratna Sri.C.Subramaniam. During this 10th anniversary of NRM Swami Sachidananda Bharathi is undertaking an all-India peace pilgrimage to unite the citizens of this country for the mission of national regeneration and to seek their active participation in transforming NRM into a ??Second Freedom Struggle?? for the moral freedom of India. Swamiji started his all-India peace pilgrimage which he has termed ??Desh Vandana-2007?? from New Delhi on 30th Jan 2007 with a self-dedication at Rajghat and a prayer meeting at Gandhi Smriti. Gandhigram Rural University also wishes to play a humble yet valuable part in this historic mission

About the Seminar: Soon after the conclusion of ??Desh Vandana-2007?? on 30th Jan 2008 at Gandhi Mandapam, Kanyakumari, there will be a 3-day National Seminar from 1st to 3rd February 2008 at Gandhigram Rural University on ??Gandhian Liberation Techniques for the National Regeneration Movement (Second Freedom Struggle)??. We are glad that our University is given the opportunity to host this National Seminar.
Those attending this national seminar are expected to play leadership roles in the NRM. I am informed that you are keen to join us in the national seminar. I extend a warm welcome to you to Gandhigram Rural University. Please fill up the enclosed registration form and send it to us along with the registration fee of Rs.300/- drawn in favour of Navasrushti International Trust payable at Ernakulam.
