Sustainability of the earth and its natural resources represents a crucial
issue that must be addressed in this technology-centric century. Although
information services are generally not physical in nature and therefore do
not directly result in the emission of greenhouse gasses or destruction of
other natural resources, software does play a vital role in controlling
machines and buildings that have a direct impact on the environment. When
the target domain of software to be developed has a potential impact on
the global environment, complex factors should be taken into consideration
during the analysis and definition of requirements. This is a new
challenge facing Requirements Engineering.

High quality requirements that are apparently unrelated to environmental
issues are also crucial in our modern information-intensive society. Only
by fully understanding stakeholders’ needs, and documenting them in a
concise, and unambiguous way, can we consistently deliver quality products
designed to meet the complexities of our advanced information society.
Failure to engineer high quality requirements or failure to develop
products that satisfy these requirements will ultimately lead to an
information society that naively prioritizes its short-term needs over
issues of long-term global sustainability.

The IEEE International Requirements Engineering conference provides the
premier international forum for researchers, educators and industrial
practitioners to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends,
experiences and concerns in the field of requirements engineering.

Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to: requirements
elicitation, analysis, documentation, validation and verification;
requirements specification languages, methods, processes, and tools;
requirements management, traceability, viewpoints, prioritization, and
negotiation; modelling of requirements (formal and informal), goals, and
domains; prototyping, simulation, and animation; interaction between
requirements and design; evolution of requirements over time, product
families, and variability; relating requirements to business goals,
products, architecture, and testing; social, cultural, global, personal
and cognitive factors in requirements engineering; collaborative
requirements engineering; domain-specific problems, experiences and
solutions.

PAPER CATEGORIES
================
We invite submissions of high quality papers in three categories:

Technical solution papers present solutions for requirements-related
problems which are novel or significantly improve existing solutions.
Evaluation criteria: The proposed solution technique or its application to
this kind of problem must be novel and sound. The author(s) must provide a
preliminary validation of the proposed solution, such as a
proof-of-concept and/or sound arguments that the solution technique will
work and that it will scale to real-world-sized problems. Results must be
stated clearly so that the author(s) or others can further validate them
in later research. A technical solution paper should also be clear about
its contributions with respect to related work by others and to previous
work by the author(s. A paper of this category must not exceed 10 pages.

Scientific evaluation papers evaluate existing problem situations or
validate/refute proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e. by
empirical studies, experiments, case studies, simulations, formal
analyses, mathematical proofs, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and
practices in industry also falls into this category.
Evaluation criteria: The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as
well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The
evaluation method or analysis approach must be sound and appropriate. The
research must be novel or, otherwise, the results must constitute a
significant increase of knowledge. The results must be relevant and/or
(statistically) significant. The research should be situated in the
context of related work by others and previous work by the author(s). A
paper of this category must not exceed 10 pages.

Industrial practice and experience papers present problems or challenges
encountered in practice, discuss insights, innovations in industrial
practice, success and failure stories. The focus is on ‘what’ and on
lessons learned, not on an in-depth analysis of ‘why’. Otherwise, consider
submitting a scientific evaluation paper.
Evaluation criteria: The practice must be clearly described and its
context must be given. Readers should be able to follow easily and to draw
conclusions for their own practice. The conclusion and lessons learned
should be justified by quantitative or qualitative evidence. A paper of
this category must not exceed 6 pages.

website. Papers must describe original work not submitted or presented at
other forums. Accepted papers will be published in an IEEE CS Press
Conference Proceedings and will be available in the IEEE CS Digital
Library.

Authors without web access must make advance arrangements with the Program
Chair at least one week before the deadline. Submissions must be formatted
according to IEEE CS proceedings format (see

MOTIVATIONS AND BACKGROUND

Service orientation is rapidly emerging as the leading network computing paradigm. At the same time, services have become the dominant form of economic activity and increasingly the basis for socio-economic organization. The commonalities and synergies among service concepts across the levels of IT infrastructure and business and social organization will lead to powerful innovations and new developments, triggering a call to establish a new discipline of ?Services Science, Management, and Engineering (SSME)?. A common feature of service orientation across all levels is the need to understand and characterize what the customer wants, including socio-technical constraints, and to design services that can meet those requirements effectively.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Requirements engineering (RE) has emerged as a critical area in software and systems engineering, as many systems fail due to poorly understood, ill-defined or ill-conceived requirements. Much of the same concepts and techniques could potentially be applied to services, with the benefit of systematic methods and scientific inquiry. However, service orientation introduces many new challenges. Service providers and service users interact much more closely. Knowledge is created and exchanged among customers and suppliers. Instead of a single set of requirements on a technical system, there are networks of providers and users, each with requirements and expectations on each other ? some based on tacit social conventions, and each with requirements on their technical IT systems. Service design and operation often proceed in parallel, as new knowledge and experiences are incorporated into service systems and processes on an ongoing basis. Automated processes are richly interwoven with human action, decision, and judgment. Some of the interactions will adhere to open standards, while others may be informally negotiated. There are highly dynamic on-the-fly network configurations as well as long-term stable relationships.

To continue the on-going discussions from the REFS 2007 workshop amongst active researchers and practitioners all over the world, we expect to gather more enthusiastic participants this year in Finland, who will take the opportunity to share their knowledge in intensive informal discussion to develop new ideas, new strategies and new productive networks on topics relevant to requirements for What existing and new requirements engineering methods and techniques are suitable for a service oriented environment? What adaptations, extensions or re-conceptualizations will be needed? How can requirements engineering contribute to a new discipline of services science, management, and engineering? Will service orientation lead to a rethinking of the field of requirements engineering? These are some of the key questions explored at this workshop.

SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP AND EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

The workshop aims to provide a forum for a highly interactive and in-depth discussion of all issues related to requirements engineering for services. PAPER SUBMISSION

Papers must be submitted electronically via the REFS2008 Submission Page. Please follow the instructions posted on the web site. The format of submitted papers should follow the guidelines for IEEE conference proceedings. All papers will be carefully reviewed by at least three reviewers. Papers will be accepted (and can be submitted) as either regular papers, short papers, or fast abstracts. Acceptance and final category depends on reviewer feedback.

PAPER PUBLICATION

Accepted papers will be published in the Workshop Proceedings of the 32nd IEEE Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC 2008). At least one of the authors of each accepted paper must register as a full participant in the workshop to have the paper published in the COMPSAC 2007 Proceedings.

The authors of a number of selected papers of special merit will be invited to submit a revised and extended version of their papers for possible publication in a special issue in a Journal which is to be determined.

Context:
PCODA 2007 builds upon the two previous editions of PCODA held in 2005 and 2006. These past two editions were very discussion-oriented workshops, where differences and similarities between the discussed techniques were highlighted, where general difficulties of using dynamic analysis were discussed and where possible future research directions became clear. We hope to continue this trend with PCODA 2007 and we would like to invite you to submit papers and join the workshop in Vancouver, Canada.

Overview:
Without consistent or adequately complete documentation, maintainers are faced with the inevitable problem of understanding how the system is implemented prior to undertaking any maintenance task. Research into the discipline of program comprehension aims to reduce the impact of this problem; a real-life problem which studies have shown to be impacting software engineers in the sense that they tend to spend up to 50% of their time trying to comprehend the structure of a software system. PCODA focuses on program comprehension techniques that rely specifically on dynamic analysis

The workshop will be 1/2 day, discussion-oriented. Afterwards, each participant will be asked to formulate a short summary of the workshop (maximum 250 words), highlighting points of interest of his or her research. These summaries will be posted on a website (the URL will be determined later), so that possible collaborations will become visible.

Submission instructions
Be standard. There exists a lot of work on reengineering, which may give rise to some terminology conflicts. We encourage people to use the reengineering taxonomy defined in (E. J. Chikofsky and J. H. C. II. Reverse engineering and design recovery: A taxonomy, IEEE Software, 7(1):13?17, 1990.)
Be electronic. Submit your position paper in PDF, following the IEEE conference publication guidelines. Also, please include a text-only abstract in your email. Submit everything by e-mail to all of the following e-mail addresses abdelw@ece.concordia.ca, greevy@iam.unibe.ch and a.e.zaidman@tudelft.nl

Be short. Propose only one idea. We all know that you are a quality researcher with plenty of good ideas. Only, we have limited resources and we must focus. Please target five pages for your (position) papers.

Be innovative. It is okay to propose a recent idea that still has some unfinished sides to it. It is supposed to be a WORKshop, not a mini-conference. If you want to propose a crazy idea, introduce it in an extended abstract (1 page).

Be a rebel. Neglect these guidelines if you feel that your idea needs a special treatment in some way.

The purpose of the ICSOFT 2008, the 3rd International Conference on Software and Data Technologies, is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested on information technology and software development. The conference tracks are “Software Engineering”, “Information Systems and Data Management”, “Programming Languages”, “Distributed and Parallel Systems” and “Knowledge Engineering”.
Software and data technologies are essential for developing any computer information system, encompassing a large number of research topics and applications: from programming issues to the more abstract theoretical aspects of software engineering; from databases and data-warehouses to the most complex management information systems; knowledge-base systems; Distributed systems, ubiquity, data quality and many other topics are included in the scope of ICSOFT. Ideas on how to analyze and approach problems by combining software development and data technologies, either in the scope of R&D projects, engineering or business applications, are welcome. Papers describing new methods or technologies, advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques and general survey papers indicating future directions are also encouraged. Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas listed below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors, will be published in the Proceedings of ICSOFT, with an ISBN. Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance and originality. The IEEE European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS) is the premier conference for both researchers and practitioners to exchange the latest advances in the state of the art and practices of Web Services. The main objectives of this conference are to facilitate the exchange between researchers and practitioners and to foster future collaborations in Europe and beyond.

The success encountered by the Web has shown that tightly coupled software systems are only good for niche markets, whereas loosely coupled software systems can be more flexible, more adaptive and often more appropriate in practice. Loose coupling makes it easier for a given system to interact with other systems, possibly legacy systems that share very little with it.

Web services are at the crossing of distributed computing and loosely coupled systems. When applications adopt service-oriented architectures, they can evolve during their lifespan more easily and adapt better to changing or unpredictable environments. When properly implemented, services can be discovered and invoked dynamically using non-proprietary mechanisms, while each service can still be implemented in a black-box manner. This is important from a business perspective since customers no longer need to “choose their side”.

Each service can be implemented using any technology, independently from the others. What matters is that everybody agrees on the integration technology, and there is a consensus about this in today’s middleware market: customers want to use Web technologies. Despite these promises, however, service integrators, developers, and providers need to create methods, tools and techniques to support cost-effective development and the use of dependable services and service-oriented applications.
