Libraries without Boundaries : Reaching the Unreachable in Knowledge Era

The enormous growth in the ICT has made the World as Global village and there is an apparent death of distance. The convergence of the computing and communications has also brought a radical change in the way libraries and information centres have been imparting information to the users. There is a paradigm shift from the information based services to the Knowledge based services as Knowledge is considered as a most powerful fact in the development of an economy of a nation and is the fourth wave experienced by the human lives. In these changing scenarios, the libraries have to take a proactive approach and to work for this tectonic change that the Knowledge Society will encompass in its domain. The library professionals can no longer keep themselves in the insulated state away from the challenges which needs to be addressed by them. The Government of India has constituted under the National Knowledge Commission a special group on Libraries and Informatics and has proposed a knowledge based society and the emergence of libraries and network centres as one of the contributing entities for developing a knowledge based society. There is a greater need to provide the citizen focused services and the library services must focus on the common man and we must ensure that the libraries are able to bridge up the gap between the two tiered society of ?Knowledge haves? and ?knowledge have-nots?

It is with this concern that the National Convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2007) being organized by DELNET at New Delhi in November 2007 to debate various issues on the subject.

3rd Rizal Library International Conference October 22, 2007 October 24, 2007 Philippines

http://rizal.lib.admu.edu.ph/2007conf/index.htm
The Conference Program is designed to encourage and appreciate the exchange of ideas and experiences on strategic plans that ensure responsiveness and relevance of libraries, librarians, and information professionals in the information society. Likewise, the conference pursues how library stakeholders create and manage library roadmaps in a constantly changing society. While it?s true that some libraries and information centers have accomplished great strides, they should continue to create new roadmaps to meet greater challenges.

The 2007 Rizal Library International Conference theme is ?From Classroom to Career: Roadmaps to a Library?s Success?. The Committee invites librarians, library educators, archivists, and information professionals to submit papers on the following sub-themes:
Service-Friendly Librarians: Challenges and Opportunities

The key to a library?s success is productive partnership between the client and the library. Every librarian/information professional faces the challenge of positioning his/herself in an ever-changing information environment. The topic seeks to demonstrate the importance of balance between professional competence and personal qualities in meeting the expectations of clients to attain service excellence.

Library Theory and Research: an Imperative Challenge

Libraries and information centers are in a period of remarkably challenging transition?as technology continuous to change the information environment. This topic aims to encourage librarians and information professionals to expand the knowledge-base of librarianship through research.

Adventures in Marketing Library Resources and Services

In a highly competitive information society, libraries compete with other information providers. The topic aims to present creative, practical and effective blueprints to promote resources and services of the library, thus, achieving the institution?s mission.

Collection Development in a Free Access Environment

The Internet opened the gate to free information in ways that no one has ever imagined. The increasing use of the Internet shows its stability and staying power. This paper will venture to discuss the equation: Internet = strong library resources = lesser cost, consequently, advancing this technology to the benefit of libraries and information centers.

Classification and Indexing: Changing Roles of Subject Access Tools

The proliferation and continuing rapid growth of all kinds of resources including electronic documents present ample challenges in providing appropriate access tools. Hence, catalogers and indexers are now encouraged to review and reevaluate existing tools in bibliographic control and subject access. Therefore, this topic explores and analyses the changing roles of subject access taking into consideration the characteristics and nature of the current information environment.
CALL FOR PAPERS

The Rizal Library Conference Committee invites proposals for papers for the ?Third Rizal Library International Conference to be held in Escaler Hall, Ateneo de Manila University, October 22-24, 2007.

GAELIC 2005 Symposium - The e-services environment: changing to a higher gear May 9, 2005 May 10, 2005 South Africa

http://www.fotim.ac.za/conference.html
Organised by the Gauteng and Environs Library Consortium (GAELIC)

The academic library consortium, GAELIC, is hosting a two day symposium called ?The e-Services Environment: Changing to a Higher Gear? from 9-10 May 2005 at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria.

The focus of the symposium is to examine the challenges facing South African academic and research libraries in delivering e-Services especially within the emerging e-Research environment where our libraries find themselves at the centre of converging streams of technology, digital scholarship and changing research practices.

The symposium is an opportunity for both international and South African colleagues to share their insights and expertise so that our librarians are equipped to plan and act strategically. Find out how we can lead our institutions in addressing the new needs of digital scholarship (humanities, social sciences and physical sciences), and get to grips with what the e-Research infrastructure requires. The presentations and workshops will consider the implications of e-Research for our research libraries and research institutions, including data curation, open access, institutional repositories, digital expertise etc

The target audience is library and information professionals in research and academic environments, including academic libraries, research council libraries, national and provincial government department libraries, corporate research libraries, public & community library research sections, LIS teaching departments.

Seize the moment to network with international and South African experts and colleagues brought together by GAELIC to explore and share how the rapidly emerging e-Services will impact your library and organisation. Be part of the debate about the challenges facing South African academic and research libraries in delivering e-Services.

Diarise it now- join us at the GAELIC 2005 Symposium.
