GCC National Housing Challenges Conference March 26, 2008 March 27, 2008 United Arab Emirates

http://datamatixgroup.com
The GCC National Housing Challenges Conference will discuss the housing shortage and the challenges it presents to GCC governments as they struggle to provide enough affordable homes for their citizens. The conference will examine the role of various players ? government and private sector ? in addressing housing demands, including finance and mortgage providers and the options they provide to national home buyers.

An extremely critical issue, the housing shortage affects not only individuals in the region, but businesses, municipalities, governments, and ultimately the entire economy as well. We welcome key players from the government and private sector firms and financial institutions to join us and participate in this conference, in order to learn more about the issues and challenges of national housing and determine a course of action that will achieve national goals.
Another aspect of the housing situation that will be discussed in the conference is finance and the options available to GCC nationals; housing financing is now going through a paradigm shift, with GCC retail banks taking on an increasingly important role. This development is something new in the GCC countries - where a government-owned housing fund has been a leading actor in housing finance, but is now being joined by a competitive banking system

Understanding Conflicts?
Cross-Cultural Perspectives

</html>

An international, interdisciplinary research conference on the diversity of conceptions and cultural images of conflicts, based on analyses of research models, mediation practices, and religious worldviews

Idea:
Conflicts are part of human life?wherever humans interact, as individuals, as groups, as representatives of a culture, their diverse interests and values often cannot be jointly realized. The development of conflicts largely depends on how the conflicting parties view the situation they are in. Attention to differences in the images of conflicts?the agentive understanding of sources, dynamics, and possible transformations of conflicts?is thus of central significance for conflict management and intervention.

Aim:
The purpose of this conference is to explore and engage cultural differences in approaches to conflict as articulated in theories and implemented in social practices. Accounts and models in the interdisciplinary field of ?Conflict Analysis and Resolution? (e.g., game-theoretic, algorithmic, communication-theoretic, norm-theoretic approaches) shall be put into wider cross-cultural perspective where other sources of agentive orientation besides empirical science are also taken into account.

Focus:
The conference will be focused on the analysis of cultural diversity in conceptions of conflict as documented in theoretical models of empirical research and research in the humanities, reflections on mediation and counselling practices, and, in particular, religious worldviews in theological interpretation. Different cultures (systems of symbol-mediated interactive practices) not only generate conflicts but also impose on agents different ?conflict cultures?? preferences for certain types of conflict dynamics (war, settlements, reconciliation) and predispositions for certain forms of epistemic approach (rational analysis, psychological hermeneutics, deep orientation or ?spiritual opening?).

Significance:
The leading questions raised by the meeting will be of theoretical and practical significance. Empirical studies of conflicts in psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, and political science describe particular (classes of) conflicts for the purposes of explanation and prediction. To what extent are the theoretical models of conflict analysis in contact with practical conceptions implemented in counselling and mediation? To what extent do cultural images of conflicts and associated conflict cultures matter in theoretical description and practical understanding? Does the history of conflicts show that differences in the cultural images of conflicts matter for conflict dynamics? What kinds of cultural images of conflicts and associated conflict cultures are projected by the five world religions? Can the humanities?in particular philosophy?provide conceptual and methodological orientation for the formation of a new cultural image of conflict or a new associated conflict culture that allows for constructive interactions with diversity?

Expected results:
The conference will generate are research contributions that are directly relevant for the transformation of cultural conflicts (not only by third party intervention but also by the conflicting parties themselves) and thus bound to receive particular attention by the larger public.

Conference Organizers: Johanna Seibt, Jesper Garsdal, Steen Wackerhausen
The funding for this conference is provided by the University of Aarhus, Research Focus Area ?Knowledge Society? led by Steen Wackerhausen, and the SophiaEuropa Program of the METANEXUS Institute, USA.

1st Chike Okoli International Conference on Entrepreneurship February 19, 2008 February 21, 2008 Nigeria

http://www.chikeokolifoundation.org
Introduction

Persisting stagnation and in some cases deterioration in the development indices of most countries in Africa has continued to resonate the need for other alternative approaches for development in the continent. Emerging evidence suggests rather forcefully that entrepreneurship is one of those pragmatic approaches that could fast track Africa?s trajectory to development. Entrepreneurship therefore has emerged as a legitimate approach for stimulating economic development and fostering rapid transformation of even the most backward economy. The imperativeness of integrating entrepreneurship culture in the mainstream development plan of economies in Africa is therefore not debatable. Incidentally, limited efforts have been directed in this regard, thus creating serious gap that requires urgent research and policy attention.

Conference Objective

Given the above, the 1st Chike Okoli International Conference on Entrepreneurship hopes to create opportunity for entrepreneurs, scholars, and policy makers to galvanize ideas that would provide credible solutions on the best approach for integrating entrepreneurship into the development agenda of countries in Africa and indeed other regions of the world with development challenges.

The Unveiled Conference

Imagine a generation of college students fervent to KNOW God! Think how your campus will change if Christians love people greatly. What would life be like if worship is SEEN in every area of your life.

While we worship in our churches, the world searches. Reality TV shows try experiment after experiment to find out what true LOVE is, where HOPE comes from, who you can TRUST, and how you can better yourself. But man’s best effort still falls short, and in place of hope, people find themselves… LOST. What if all the answers could be found in ONE place? What if hope was not what you do but WHO you know? What if God could be UNVEILED?

“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the VEIL is taken away…And we, who with UNVEILED faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory.” -2 Corinthians 3:14-16

It is our sincere hope and prayer that you would join us as we humbly, yet confidently seek to experience God.

Four days is not a life…but it could change one.

Powerful Worship. Heartfelt Prayer. Relevant Teaching. Tight Community. Outreach to Atlanta. Ridiculous Crazy Fun.
This is a conference for College Students and High School Seniors. It is sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. It is in Atlanta, GA. Please see the website at: www.Unveiled07.com

International Conference on African Culture and Development April 20, 2008 April 24, 2008 Ghana

http://www.icacd.ccoghana.org
ICACD seeks to re-examine African cultural institutions and practices and explore avenues where the institutions and practices can be used as a tool for the development of the African continent.

ICACD is aimed at creating a platform for Africans to make an input on how their culture and social institutions can compliment government efforts in achieving growth and development on the continent.

Over the years, there have been several attempts from local and international circles to draw and implement workable programs and policies that will spark-off development in Africa.

However, it is interesting to note, that most programs intended to ignite Africa?s development fails to yield the intended result due to the fact that, culture and the way of life of Africans seems to be partially or totally ignored.

It is therefore imperative that, further research and exchange of ideas are conducted to identify how the social and cultural institutions of Africa can support African political institutions to bring about the desired change in Africa. The ICACD 2008 will examine how global actions, Policies and Programs for Africa are affected by the various cultures in Africa. More importantly, the conference will look at how the culture and the social set up of African societies will compliment programs and policies directed at achieving desired goals in the MDGs.

The conference is a wonderful opportunity for all stakeholders to discuss what is happening in Africa and why we are not achieving targets in Africa.

Media in Transition 5: creativity, ownership and collaboration in the digital age April 27, 2007 April 29, 2007 USA

http://web.mit.edu/comm-forum/mit5
Call for Papers

(submission deadline: Jan. 5, 2007)

Our understanding of the technical and social processes by which culture is made and reproduced is being challenged and enlarged by digital technologies. An emerging generation of media producers is sampling and remixing existing materials as core ingredients in their own work. Networked culture is enabling both small and large collaborations among artists who may never encounter each other face to face. Readers are actively reshaping media content as they personalize it for their own use or customize it for the needs of grassroots and online communities. Bloggers are appropriating and recontextualizing news stories; fans are rewriting stories from popular culture; and rappers and techno artists are sampling and remixing sounds.

These and related cultural practices have generated heated contention and debate. What constitutes fair use of another’s intellectual property? What ethical issues are posed when sounds, images, and stories move from one culture or subculture to another? Or when materials created by a community or religious or ethnic tradition are appropriated by technologically powerful outsiders? What constitutes creativity and originality in expressive formats based on sampling and remixing? What obligations do artists owe to those who have inspired and informed their work and how much creative freedom should they exercise over their borrowed or shared materials?

One source of answers to such questions lies in the past ? in the ways in which traditional printed texts ? and films and TV shows as well ? invoke, allude to and define themselves against their rivals and ancestors; and ? perhaps even more saliently ? in the ways in which folk and popular cultures may nourish and reward not originality in our modern sense, but familiarity, repetition, borrowing, collaboration.

This fifth Media in Transition conference, then, aims to generate a conversation that compares historical forms of cultural expression with contemporary media practices. We hope this event will appeal widely across disciplines and scholarly and professional boundaries. For example, we hope this conference will bring together such figures as:

anthropologists of oral and folk cultures
historians of the book and reading publics
political scientists and legal scholars interested in alternative approaches to intellectual property
media educators who aim to help students think about their ethical responsibilities in this new participatory culture
artists ready to discuss appropriation and collaboration in their own work
economists and business leaders interested in the new relationships that are emerging between media producers and consumers
activists and netizens interested in the ways new technologies democratize who has the right to be an author
Among topics the conference might explore:

history of authorship and copyright
folk practices in traditional and contemporary society
appropriating materials from other cultures: political and ethical dilemmas
poetics and politics of fan culture
blogging, podcasting, and collective intelligence
media literacy and the ethics of participatory culture
artistic collaboration and cultural production, past and present
fair use and intellectual property
sampling and remixing in popular music
cultural production in traditional and developing societies
Web 2.0 and the “architecture of participation”
creative industries and user-generated content
parody, spoofs, and mash-ups as critical commentary
game mods and machinima
the workings of genre in different media systems
law and technological change
